Navigating the Road to Success: Irene’s Story of Perseverance in Higher Education

As a first-generation college graduate and dedicated higher ed professional, Irene's journey to earn a bachelor’s degree is a story of determination, support, and self-discovery.

Reflecting on her career trajectory, Irene Sukhu knew that she wanted more — for herself and for her future. It was at this pivotal moment that Irene's mentor planted the seed of possibility by introducing her to Rivet School.

"I was at a point in my life where it had been 10 years since I was a student, but I knew I needed to go back to school," Irene shares. "One of my concerns was the cost of attending a UC or CSU, but Rivet School offered an affordable and accelerated alternative to earning an online BA degree."

With the encouragement of her manager, Irene took the leap and enrolled with Southern New Hampshire University through their partnership with Rivet School. "I wanted to do something for myself," Irene explains. "This was the first accomplishment of my life that I did for me. I didn't want to remain stagnant in my position at work, so I pursued my business degree to move up in my job."

After 16 months of hard work and dedication, Irene achieved her goal of graduating debt-free with her Bachelor's Degree in Business Management. The significance of this accomplishment was not lost on Irene—it represented far more than just a piece of paper.

"My degree was the first thing I could call my own," Irene shares. "It was a sense of security for me—not just financial, but emotional and mental. It was a symbol of my resilience and determination."

Within a year of earning her degree, Irene's hard work paid off as she was promoted to a higher paying job at Los Medanos College—an achievement that validated her decision to pursue post-secondary education and move forward in her career. Since then, she has continued on to earn her MBA 100% online from Southern New Hampshire University.
