Paving the Way: Sidney's Impact as a First-Generation College Student and Educator

As a first generation college student and K-12 Elementary Educator at Rocketship Public Schools, Sidney is paving the way for her future.

Raised alongside six siblings, Sidney has always understood the importance of education in securing her future. Despite her aspirations, though, Sidney encountered numerous obstacles as she navigated various community colleges and online universities on her path to earning a college degree. These roadblocks left her feeling discouraged and uncertain about continuing to pursue her higher education.

"Growing up, I didn't have parents with [college] degrees to look up to in this way," Sidney reflects. "But I knew that I wanted to break the generational cycle in my family of not being educated."

Drawn to the online, flexible curriculum and highly-supportive environment, Sidney found renewed hope and motivation to pursue her academic goals with Southern New Hampshire University’s partnership with Rivet School.

"If it wasn't for my College Coach, Shelly, I don't think I'd still be in this program," Sidney acknowledges. "The support I've received from Rivet School—my coaches and the staff—has put me in a position to accomplish what I want to do. I'm super, super grateful."

Honoring the memory of her late father, who motivated her to pursue her bachelor’s degree, Sidney has moved forward with purpose. Through this journey, she has not only inspired herself but also her family, including her mother, for whom Sidney’s success was the catalyst for her to pursue her own educational aspirations.

"I never thought it would be possible for someone like me to earn a degree," Sidney says with pride. "But now I can be the one to inspire them."

As Sidney continues on her journey towards earning her Bachelor's of Arts in Business Management, she serves as inspiration to all first-gen students who dare to dream big and defy the odds.
